How to Shop Your Closet

Have you recently looked in your closet lately?  I mean actually stopped and looked at what you have?  For a while I didn’t.  I’ll honestly say I didn’t know how I was going to shoot content with a limited amount of clothing.  I couldn’t shop much because I had to pay bills. Yes, it’s just me and my dog and one paycheck.

I had to slow my spending and really take a closer look at what I actually had.  I was thinking, “How am I going to share with them something I have when everything is out of season?”  Well first of all, you didn’t know that and plus I didn’t know that I could always provide an alternative to what I had” (I’m talking about sharing content on LTK).

I knew I had a lot of clothes but I also knew that I had to use what I already had in my closet and begin styling.  We can get so caught up in not having what we see another person with that we look at our own closet and think we don’t have anything.  I don’t know if you’ve noticed this but we style our clothes without even knowing it.  Yes!  That dress you have can be styled with a jacket, and sneakers or dressed up with some heels. That tank top can go with a long or short skirt, place it with a jean jacket, a blazer, a cardigan and a nice necklace and head out the door.

We have all that we need and we know how to style our own clothes but when we see someone else with what we want, we have to have it.

I know I used to do this.  It got to the point where I had items in my closet I haven’t even worn yet but I was out once again buying something else.  I didn’t know when I’d taken a trip to the store that I’d already bought the same pair of jeans, just in a different size.  Oh I know it’s happened to you.

We get so caught up in what we don’t have that we don’t wear what we do have.  Nothing is wrong with going out and purchasing something for a special occasion or a cardigan or jacket you’re trying to replenish because your other one is tired and worn out, but don’t neglect what you have in your closet.  I don’t want you to get in the habit of buying just to have it and look back a year from now...when it’s out of style and ask yourself, “Why did I buy that in the first place.”  Everything looks pretty on an impulse.

Here are my THREE tips on why you should shop your closet:

The great thing about shopping in your closet is knowing that there are some great staples and timeless pieces that will never go out of style.  Heck, if you want to buy something, buy things that won’t go out of style.  That way you’ll always have something to wear them with.

Your closet is your closet and no one else’s.  Meaning, you’ll always have something no one else has.  You’ll always have exclusive pieces to your unique style.  Yep!  That’s the key word, unique.  Everyone doesn’t share the same interests so your style is unique to you.  Love what you already have and who you are.

That brings me to my last tip: Love who you are.  The reason why we buy on impulse is because we’re not satisfied with who we are.  We think that if we continue to purchase items that we see on other people who may be taller, shorter, thinner, or curvier, that we’ll look like them.  You can’t be anyone else but yourself.  When you begin to realize that, you’ll begin to shop for you and what you enjoy.
