Everyone has their story as to why they changed their eating habits. My way isn’t your typical way. I didn’t know what was wrong. I thought I was having a bulimic episode.
The food I was consuming was making me sick. I initially didn’t know what it was. I thought maybe the Pepsi I was drinking wasn’t the right choice to wash down my food, so I switched to Sprite and that correction only lasted a few times.
I began to pray about it because I didn’t know what else to do. I didn’t know what was wrong. I thought I was having a bulimic episode except I wasn’t forcing myself to throw up. I loved the carbs, fat, and meaty protein I was eating but unfortunately it didn’t love me back. My body was telling me something and it was about time I paid attention. I decided to cut out sodas to see what impact it had on my body and I began to feel a little better, then I decided not to incorporate so much meat into my diet and I began to feel better than I had.
I realized something at this moment, that the meat I was eating was making me sick. I had bad feelings after I ate the food, like I wasn’t supposed to eat it. I heard a voice that would constantly tell me not to eat it and that I need to change my eating habits. For the longest time, before I made the switch, I ignored these signs. I thought my body was just going through a phase and it’ll be over soon but I realized what I was going through was bigger than just a little phase.
I initially cut out all meat, egg, and milk and became plant-based.
Plant-based is more lenient on what you can eat. So with this kind of lifestyle, you can eat meat, egg, and milk just as long as you don’t eat too much of it. Plant-based individuals pay close attention to the ingredients in foods. You want to make sure that everything is natural meaning you’re literally able to read every ingredient in the food and actually know what it is.
How I switched over to eating more healthy, I did it “cold turkey.” I’ve eaten healthy a few times here and there so my body was completely fine with it. Eating healthy requires you to eat certain foods and a lot of times, there aren’t many restaurants in major states...besides California that actually caters to the vegan/vegetarians/plant-based community, so a lot of meals I made were from scratch. Here is one:
Homemade Cheesy Biscuits
It also took a long time to figure out what to eat and what not to eat as a plant-based individual but I did it. My family thought this was just a fad because they didn’t honestly believe I really had a problem. I even informed my doctors about it and they provided me with some really helpful information.
I’m happy to say that I have been plant-based for one year and I’m still going strong!! I feel so much better in my life. My body feels so much better. I learned so much from being plant-based. I’ve recently gone back to eating eggs, chicken, and seafood however and I haven’t had any issues. I did this because my body didn’t reject it. I didn’t get sick eating it. I’ve missed it...especially eggs. I couldn’t see myself letting that go but I do only eat caged-free.
I still can no longer eat pork or beef. Even there being a residue of it, will have me in the restroom feeling like I’m dying. I don’t drink soda, unless it’s a natural Izze but other than that, I’ll drink iced tea, lemonade, and water.
What I never signed up for but was a part of the process was losing weight. My weight began to drop significantly. Before changing my eating, I was beginning to gain weight in places that weren’t ideal and it was definitely becoming uncomfortable. But because I also have hyperthyroidism, I don’t keep much weight on me and when I lose weight it comes right off without hesitation. You may say I’m blessed. It’s more like a blessing and a curse because if I wanted to gain just a smidge, that would be very difficult.
When I began to lose weight, it came off so quickly that I couldn’t keep up. The next thing I knew, I was 98 pounds. You could see my bones. My family was telling me not to wear black because it seemed as though I was wasting away.
People would say that you can eat certain foods and it will help you keep your weight instead of losing it so quickly but with me, one I was only purchasing high item, natural foods with an allowance I gave myself to do so. Also, in order for me to eat full healthy meals, I would have to eat multiple times a day because my body burns it off so quickly. For a while, I didn’t know what to do and that's why I kept bread and cheese in my diet.
I also learned that just because it’s healthy, doesn’t mean you’re going to like it. Don’t get something and force yourself to like it when you don’t. Purchase healthy items that suit you and your pallet. These are just a few items full of healthy snacks and food that also won't break the bank.
