Learn My Secrets on How I Avoid Distractions

We all have the same 24 hours in a day and it all depends on how we use that time. 

Lately I’ve been kind of distracted and waiting until the last minute to create content and for a while I didn’t like it but I just went with it because it was the only time I could get my creative juices flowing. What I’ve learned about this is that even though a lot of people...including myself would call this procrastination, it really isn’t. I know, it sounds crazy right? But hear me out. Sometimes when we’re trying to get things done, we always want to do it during the day so we can have the rest of the day to ourselves and take care of any other tasks that need our attention. Sometimes, especially as a content creator, I honestly have a hard time constantly thinking about what caption to have when and at what time. Everything is strategic in what I do. It’s all about it making sense and when’s the best time to post it for you (my audience) to see. 

For the past month, I have waited until the last couple of hours of the day to create and prepare content because that’s when I was the most creative. I’m saying this to say that you really just have to listen to your mind and body. You can’t force creativity. You’ll add on to that creative block that you already have. 

Grab ideas from other sources such as, blogging pages or Instagram captions or Pinterest. I initially thought this was something you didn’t want to do because it was like taking someone else’s idea.  Stop thinking that way. You’re not taking anything away from anyone. For me, if there’s a name attached to a caption, I’ll add it to my caption before posting because it’s the right thing to do and God don’t play. I wouldn’t want anyone to do that to me. Also, a lot of times when I see a great caption, I take inspiration from it as it reminds me of something that I’ve gone through and I’d rather share my experience with you than sharing a one lined quote. 

Know your triggers. For me, my triggers are watching YouTube/Netflix. I watch too much of it. Yeah...too much because I don’t read like I should anymore. I’ve recently started a book and was going to talk to y'all about it but I haven’t picked it back up yet and need to do that. 

Understand what is routine distraction for you. What takes your mind off of important things that you know you should be more focused on. When you accomplish your daily tasks, you feel much better. 

Have you realized that some days go by slower than others?  I honestly believe it’s God allowing us to take care of the things we’ve been complaining we don’t have enough time for. God will give you the time to accomplish what you’re asking Him for but it’s up to you to take advantage of that time and actually do something with it. There’s no reason you can say that you didn’t have the time when you have it right now. Use it wisely and you’ll be amazed at what you accomplish in a 24 hour period. 

Write it down. I’ve had to do this a few times. When a few ideas run through my head and I know it’s something that’ll help me with creating content or getting things done, I go ahead and write it down. When I see something right in front of me, written down, I’m 9 times out of 10 more likely to do it. It’s another way to see things more clearly and an opportunity to visualize it. 

Limit Screen Time. I bet you’ve heard this from a couple of influencers you follow already, well sorry but you’re going to hear it again. Allowing yourself to be on the screen for too long can cause damage and headaches, creative mental blocks, and other things that aren’t doing you, your mind or body any good. 

Don’t start your day with your phone. I don’t allow myself to start my day with my phone in my hand. That’s a bad habit and it doesn’t allow you the opportunity to be present in life...in the real world. Allow yourself at least a couple of hours before you get on your phone. Use this time for something else. What I do is pray. I talk to God first, and then I’ll go on the Bible app and begin reading the scripture of the day. 

Limit how long you’re on your screen. Before my first post is uploaded, I let the algorithm and my virtual besties know that I’m active on my page. I’ll do this for about an hour or two and then I take the time to get my day started. From that point on, I’m on social media only for a couple of hours at a time. Towards the end of the day, my last comment goes out at 10pm. 

I like to make sure I have enough time to myself and my dog. I don’t want my entire life to be consumed by social media. I need to enjoy fresh air and the REAL WORLD! We can’t forget that’s what we actually live in. Don’t forget you have people who actually love and care for you and would like to have your attention as well.

Just Do It. This has been my motto. My phrase of the year that has gotten me through so much and of course with God right by my side. The day before writing this, I felt like I had all of the time in the world and for the first time in a while, I felt so motivated and heard God tell me to go ahead and get your content done for tomorrow so you don’t have to worry about doing it later. I’ll be honest and say, I kept putting it off because I didn’t know what to write about. But as you can tell, if you’ve made it this far in the post, congrats because I didn’t know I had this much to say. 

You never know what you’re capable of until you “Just Do It.” Yep, Nike was right. Just get it done and don’t stop until you can’t go anymore. 

I do yoga 5x a week and I love it but before I start, I wonder if I actually want to do it. When I get on my mat and actually start, I feel motivated and it keeps me motivated for the rest of the day. We all have those thoughts of, “Do I want to do this?” but we can’t allow that to take up mental space and deprive us of what we need/want to accomplish. When you think about something for too long, you’ll talk yourself out of actually doing it and you’ll definitely regret it later. You’ll be a better YOU when you stop thinking about it and just do it. You got this. I believe in you. 

I hope this helps and motivates you to be the best version of yourself and never give up and never give in. Don’t allow anything or anyone to stop you from what you want to accomplish.
